Initial hopes for an economic recovery have been dashed and Angola may struggle to avoid a sixth consecutive year of recession, as a new coronavirus lockdown is set to dampen economic output and disrupt the already stalled privatisations programme. Intensifying socio-economic grievances are exacerbated by political controversies such as constitutional reform and delayed elections, thus driving risk of more violent protests in Angolan cities. The prospect of sovereign debt default will rise again from next year as deferred interest payments become due.
