A little over a year ago, Angola’s governing MPLA party faced a groundswell of public discontent over a worsening social and economic situation. Rolling, nationwide protests threatened to spiral out of control and President João Lourenço’s popularity plummeted. Fast forward to mid-2022 and the MPLA’s prospects of securing victory in the upcoming August general elections are much better thanks to its effective use of electoral manipulation tactics, a resurgent economy, and the opposition’s inability to convey a coherent policy narrative. If it wins, the MPLA has pledged policy continuity and the prioritisation of ongoing privatisation initiatives in Africa’s now largest oil producer.
