Congo’s previous president is instigating a power grab in the justice ministry and again seizing control of the electoral commission to consolidate his influence ahead of the 2023 elections. Violent protests will continue in coming weeks, which will be exacerbated by frustration over the government’s mismanagement of the pandemic and allegations of embezzlement of coronavirus funds.
