At the beginning of 2020, the IMF noted that eSwatini was at a “critical juncture” as it was facing multiple years of macro-economic decline and worsening living conditions. In acknowledging the “unsustainable” situation it was in, the government enacted a number of reforms to boost growth under its National Development Plan and Strategic Roadmap. However, the arrival of COVID-19 coupled with persistent political threats are likely to undermine its lift off this year.
