The formation of a new government in Lebanon – after more than a year of political deadlock and amid an economic crisis of extreme severity – is a positive development. The new Lebanese government could ease the country’s crises by enacting basic economic reforms and securing much needed international funding. But ongoing political infighting within the cabinet and ever-growing episodes of sectarian violence will once again impede Lebanon’s ability to stabilise the country’s fast-deteriorating economy and social stability.
