LIBYA: ENERGY SECTOR REBOUND IS IMPERILLED BY RESURGENCE OF INTRA-MILITIA VIOLENCE

Libya resumed oil exports in July after a monthslong break caused by a political deadlock and a blockade by armed militias. The resumption, which could allow up to 860,000 barrels per day back onto the oil market, came after the dismissal of the chairman of the Libyan National Oil Corporation, following an agreement between western and eastern Libyan factions. Despite the encouraging sign of Libya being able to reopen its oil facilities and to get its oil back on the market, a recent wave of social unrest in some of the country’s major cities, and fighting between militias in Tripoli and Misrata, continue to reflect the fragility of the country’s socio-economic and security context.
