After eight months of often violent protests and a tense five-month judicial review, the disputed 2019 elections have been annulled – only the second time in African history. Malawi’s reinstated deputy president now has the momentum and resources to again try to unseat the incumbent president at fresh elections by end of June. In the meantime, the prospect of policy paralysis and violent unrest will batter the country’s economic outlook.
