In recent years, the region has seen relative improvements in its security and prospects for economic development. Additionally, the decline of civil conflicts after the Arab Spring era and the decline of the Islamic State insurgency have brought new opportunities for regional peace and stability. This comes at a time where setbacks in Morocco and Tunisia likely marked the end of a tough decade for Islamist opposition parties, conceivably changing the political landscape in the region, and reinforcing the strength of incumbent regimes.
