The rapid deployment of one third of South Africa’s active military personnel to curb riots and looting may not be fully realised, but even a smaller troop mobilisation should be sufficient to contain unrest in Gauteng. The military will struggle to curb violence in KwaZulu-Natal where unrest has been better organised and local law enforcement compromised. Unconfirmed reports of an ongoing “coup” are driving a disinformation campaign, although authorities will soon begin to arrest suspected instigators of orchestrated violence, which would be the culmination of a long-running battle between rival factions in the ruling party.
