South Africa’s energy crisis shows few signs of abating, as electricity rationing worsened considerably in the last three months. While the recent announcement of large-scale renewable energy tenders is a positive indicator for the longer-term outlook, the process of adding generation capacity is likely to remain hindered by a lack of investment into transmission infrastructure. Without any credible near-term solutions or mitigation measures, the situation is likely to worsen as energy demand peaks in the winter months.
