Nigeria’s disputed federal elections and delayed state polls raise fresh concerns over the role of electronic voting practices in Africa. While the adoption of electronic voting among African states is still in its infancy, technological innovations are increasingly being implemented at various levels in elections across the continent. However, despite the potential of e-voting to overcome issues with transparency, accuracy, and credibility, the digitalisation of election procedures also presents a new range of challenges. Aside from fuelling disputes over election results, increasing use of e-voting technology exposes election procedures to the threat of cyberattacks and external interference, and raises risks related to data misuse by authoritarian regimes.
