Under mounting pressure from the US and its allies, China’s government and Chinese companies are visibly downscaling their role on the African continent due to falling revenues and rising concerns over debt repayments. The focus of the bilateral relationship will shift away from debt-financed infrastructure to trade promotion. As China withdraws, it is creating an opportunity for non-traditional powers to stake an interest in Africa, including other Asian and Middle Eastern countries, as well as Russia.
