Despite rumours of a potential breakthrough in negotiations on the removal of US sanctions, a recent high-profile visit to Khartoum has offered little beyond symbolic value and thus the curbs on the financial sector will remain in place. Donors will offer little further support without advances on economic reform, although a peace agreement with armed groups is inching forward as a potential key achievement for the otherwise deadlocked transitional government.
