TOP RISKS FOR JANUARY 2021

   Wed, 30 December 2020

In January, East Africa and the Horn of Africa will face increased threats of war and terrorism amidst security developments in Ethiopia, Sudan, and Somalia. Conflict-related threats are also set to increase in north-west Nigeria as well as CAR, where the formation of a new militia alliance has preceded a fresh outbreak of armed violence across the country. Opposition-led protests are expected to continue in Zambia, Ghana and Uganda, while the dissolution of the ruling coalition in the DRC has renewed fears of political instability. In the Middle East, the threat of political violence and civil unrest will be elevated in Iraq, Israel and Lebanon, while a heightened likelihood of a US-Iran clash and growing threats to commercial maritime activity in the Red Sea will see tensions sustained across the Arabian Peninsula.
