TOP RISKS FOR JUNE 2021

   Fri, 28 May 2021

June will see a heightened threat of civil unrest amidst election-related discontent in Algeria, Ethiopia, and Lebanon, while protests driven by political and socio-economic issues are anticipated in Ghana, Malawi, and Oman. Tensions in Mali are pronounced following a second military coup on 24 May, while the imposition of military authorities has added to public frustrations in eastern DRC. The threat of renewed violence in Israel and the Gaza Strip remains high despite a recent ceasefire agreement, and continues to drive the threat of pro-Palestine protests across the region. A spike in armed attacks in north-west Cameroon, South Sudan, and the border areas of Kenya highlight persistent security issues, and militant movements in northern Mozambique suggest that a new offensive is imminent in the coming weeks. Further violence is also likely in northern Iraq and southern Turkey after a spate of attacks by Kurdish militants.
