TOP RISKS FOR MARCH 2021

   Fri, 26 February 2021

In March, the threat of socio-economic and politically-motivated civil unrest will continue to rise across Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, with anti-government protests likely to continue in Turkey, Israel, Angola, Mauritius and Ethiopia. Upcoming elections will also increase the likelihood of further unrest in Chad, Ivory Coast, and Republic of Congo, while deteriorating socio-economic conditions have seen protests erupt in Saudi Arabia, as well as southern Tunisia’s oil-producing regions. The killing of an Italian diplomat highlights the sustained threat of militia violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, while in Nigeria’s Niger Delta, militants have threatened to attack petroleum infrastructure over the alleged marginalisation of the region. Major military offensives are likely to continue in Senegal’s Casamance area and Yemen’s Ma'rib Governorate, and the threat of armed conflict continues to rise in Somalia amidst an ongoing political crisis.
