AFRICAN ELECTIONS IN 2020: POLITICALLY EXPEDIENT INTERRUPTIONS OF DEMOCRACY

   Thu, 19 March 2020

The onset of the Coronavirus in Africa offers both a valid and convenient delay to important national ballots due this year. Early test cases will be Guinea’s already delayed double poll on 22 March and Malawi’s controversial re-run election due by 19 May. Other key elections due this year also face probable delays, including in Ethiopia, Burundi, and Tanzania. West African ballots due later in 2020 may remain on schedule.
