BURKINA FASO: MILITARY JUNTA UNDER MOUNTING PRESSURE TO SEEK NEW SECURITY SUPPORT

   Fri, 24 February 2023

Following the withdrawal of French special forces from Burkina Faso this month, a mass casualty attack on the Sahel country’s military demonstrates the weak state of local counterinsurgency capability. Both the Burkinabe population and rival factions in the military will mount pressure on the junta to seek new security partnerships, most probably with Russia. Regardless of whether such partnerships are agreed, regional insecurity will continue to deteriorate in 2023, posing greater risk to mining, telecoms, and other key sectors. A so-called “Kabul” scenario is now becoming a growing probability.
