Following disputed senate elections earlier this month, economic imperatives may shift the political focus to a mediated solution to Cameroon’s six-year-old civil war. Any peace deal would trigger a resumption of much needed donor support. The prospect of an extension of two IMF programmes and unaffordable fuel subsidies being cut also enhance the economic outlook, even while the oil economy is shrinking fast. However, Cameroon’s long unresolved political succession drives continued policy uncertainty and poses longer term contract risks for investors.
