DRC: ESCALATION WITH RWANDA CONTRIBUTES TO WORSENING SECURITY OUTLOOK IN EAST

A major security incident between Rwandan and Congolese forces in eastern DRC in late January has raised concerns that a further escalation between the two states is imminent. However, while an interstate war currently remains unlikely, a further deterioration of relations between the two countries is likely to drive insecurity across the eastern region. As additional foreign forces arrive in North Kivu, the M23 rebel group has abandoned a ceasefire, and threatens to cut off the provincial capital, Goma.
