Another West African unconstitutional military intervention will draw a more severe backlash from regional countries and international partners, especially the US and France. Although blanket sanctions, border closures, and import bans may not be on the cards, targeted sanctions against coup leaders and suspensions of security cooperation now seem almost inevitable. The military has taken charge of the political transition and will refocus on its own governing priorities which poses fresh risk to contracts and reduces the probability of negotiations with Islamist insurgents.
