With under seven months remaining before highly contested general elections early next year, the Nigerian government faces a complex and dispersed set of security challenges. A recent uptick in terrorism, banditry, separatism, and communal violence risks undermining the elections, destabilising the country, and discouraging investment. Worryingly, the federal government appears to lack a clear plan to effectively neutralise these threats and ensure safe elections. Fixing these problems will be left to President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor and the leading presidential candidates are already pledging major security reforms.
