Ethiopia’s first multi-party elections in a generation were marred by low voter registration and participation, the disenfranchisement of a fifth of the country’s constituencies, frequent voter intimidation and ballot irregularities observed across almost all regional states and city administrations, as well as widespread insecurity and human rights abuses in some locations. The government will ignore international criticism including US sanctions and may now seek austerity budget cuts to improve its balance of payments as foreign investment dwindles.
