The latest violent unrest in Senegal should be seen in the context of deep-seated political and socio-economic grievances that pre-date the pandemic. As curfews and coronavirus restrictions are lifted, some motivations for protests will subside, although a recurrence of violence is likely ahead of the 2022 parliamentary elections and in case the incumbent president prepares for re-election in 2024.
