Towards the June 2023 elections, the government faces a twin crisis of socio-economic grievances due to persistently high inflation and weak growth, as well as a crisis of political trust in the ruling party’s ability to contest this year’s general elections fairly. A repeat of the 2022 violent unrest is highly probable in coming months, even while authorities resort to political oppression and higher spending on the military to curb unrest.
