South Africa’s dominant governing ANC party is backing its embattled president – at least for now – and President Cyril Ramaphosa is still expected to secure a second term as party leader in just two weeks, as we have consistently forecast. However, both the ANC and Ramaphosa have been weakened by incessant internal party factionalism that triggered the latest scandal implicating the president. The government’s pro-business policies and economic reform agenda may thus be derailed from next year, which would almost certainly weaken the ANC’s prospects to secure another majority in elections expected by 2024.
