Tunisia faces its biggest political crisis in a decade of democracy after the president intervened in the constitutional process. Increasing antagonism between the presidency, military, labour unions, and moderate Islamists has heightened risks of political instability and social volatility in coming weeks. The outcome of the president’s intervention may also risk delaying agreement on an IMF programme that had been aimed to alleviate the country’s large financing pressures.
