ZIMBABWE: RESOURCES GRAB AND POLITICAL OPPRESSION MARK ROAD TO 2023 ELECTIONS

   Tue, 14 March 2023

This week, the ruling party’s internal primaries will be held on short notice, driving heightened risk of political violence over candidacies for the 2023 general elections. The government is seeking to manipulate election procedures ahead of the vote and is pushing through legislation that would facilitate political oppression in the face of momentum for the opposition. To finance its election campaign, as well as pay militias and security forces, the government is initiating a new resources grab, this time focussed on a lithium export ban that will benefit politically affiliated military companies and Chinese investors.
